What is Computer?

Computer System is an electronic machine or device that is capable of and concerned with the accepting of data as input, stores in the Central Processing Unit, processes, manipulates and thereafter sends out the result as information(finished product)for a viable decision to be taken by the operator.

WHAT MAKES UP A COMPUTER SYSTEM?
Computer system as an electronic machine made up of several components or parts working together as a whole to ensure the functionality of the unified system in carrying out task of processing data.
Components of a computer system stated thus:

Hardware – Skeletal framework skeleton

Software – Lifeblood blood-cell

Electrons (Electricity) – Breathrespiratory-system

Motherboard – Heart heart

CPU (Central Processing Unit) – Brain brain

Cables – Nerves

Circuits – Pathways for electrons flow

Case (Chassis) – Skin (Flesh)

Peripherals – Dress that adorns the system

Human-ware – Operator computer-operator

The hardware is the skeletal framework. Just like the human skeleton, it holds components together, such that a computer system e.g. laptop or desktop can be positioned on a desk, etc.
Software like the blood in human cells energizes, strengthens, and helps to move or activate all parts of the computer system. This part controls and manages every other resource in the computer system.
Electrons or electricity, like the air humans breathe to live, is the motivating or active force that runs the computer system components (hardware) to perform tasks. Electrons are moving electric currents that powers or gives life to a computer system thereby ensuring it functionality and interoperability of all other parts.
The human heart pumps and circulates blood through nerve cells to all parts of the body. Likewise, Motherboard circulates the flowing electrons (electricity) to all parts of the computer system. Done through wires in order for systems to carryout functions such as booting, etc.
The Brain receives information, processes and translates it into meaningful units the body system can understand. In like manner, Central Processing Unit (CPU) receives input (data) in encoded form, process, interprets, and decodes the message (input) into meaningful information the computer can understand and implement.
Like Nerve Cells, Cables and wires are the channel through which the flow of electrons (electricity) passes to the board and from the board to all other computer components.
Peripherals are the attachments or externally connected parts that like ornaments beautify and shape the computer system.
Circuits are the pathways through which electrons distribute to microchips embedded on the motherboard. These chips include Integrated Circuits (IC), Transistors, Capacitors, Resistors, Diodes, etc.
Case (Chassis) is the plastic or metallic part of the computer system that covers the main skeleton from exposure.
Human-ware on the other hand, is the human or person that uses or operates the computer system, also called “Operator.”

HARDWARE: These are the physical components or parts of the computer system that includes all the computer peripheral devices. They are the parts we can see and touch.
Computer hardware categorized as Configured and Non-configured.
Hardware are said to be configured when they require programming in order to function properly. A computer hardware device, which must be programmed by the computer programmer before they can generate productive services, includes the printer, Central Processing Unit, Monitor, etc.
Hardware referred to as non-configured are those that do not need to be programmed to function. They include cables, stabilizers, extension sockets, etc.

SOFTWARE: These are programs that instruct the computer hardware to run and carryout tasks of processing data. There are two basic types namely:

  1. System software
  2. Application software

SYSTEM SOFTWARE: System software is program developed or written and built into the computer system to facilitate its functionality. It controls, coordinates or connects activities in the computer system. It is the integral part of the electro-mechanical setup of the computer system. Examples: Windows Operating System, Linux Operating System, Macintosh Operating system, Ubuntu, Chrome, etc.

APPLICATION SOFTWARE: This is a program developed by the programmer to generate services such as writing, drawing, messaging, etc. thus accomplishing the user’s task. It is classed into User application and Application Packages; example, Microsoft word, CorelDraw, Excel, Photoshop, etc.
